Dear San Diego Bay Boater,

As you may be aware, the Red Bull Air Race will be held on San Diego Bay on the weekend of April 14-16, 2017. The Red Bull Air Race team is delighted to be returning to San Diego with this fun and exciting event.

The race course for the 2017 Red Bull Air Race on San Diego Bay will consist of barges holding inflatable pylons (referred to as race gates) inside a waterway zone that spans from the north side of the Port of San Diego Tenth Avenue Marine Terminal to the north side of Tuna Harbor Park. The US Coast Guard is preparing a Special Local Regulation and temporary water closure that will affect vessel travel through this waterway zone during the following dates and times:

  • Friday, April 14 from 0800 to 1830
  • Saturday, April 15 from 1000 to 1800
  • Sunday, April 16  from  1000 to 1630

The Coast Guard will issue a detailed Notice to Mariners with exact coordinates and confirmed timing within 2-3 weeks of the event

The barges are at position 32° 42′ 18″ N, 117° 10′ 30″ W, at position 32° 42′ 14″ N, 117° 10′ 26″ W, at position 32° 42′ 10″ N, 117° 10′ 19″ W, and at position 32° 42′ 7″ N, 117° 10′ 12″ W.

During the three days when the air race course is in operation, boaters will be able to view the Friday practice day and the Saturday and Sunday competitive racing from the water on the north and south sides of the bay closure. Travel through the waterway zone will be restricted during these times. There will be brief periods each day during which vessels may traverse through the waterway zone. These will be communicated via a marine radio channel to the detailed in the Notice to Mariners.

Placement of the race gates in San Diego Bay will begin on Friday, April 7. All infrastructure will be removed by the end of the day on Monday, April 17.  Boaters are advised to keep a safe distance from the gates, and to be extra aware of dive teams working in the area.

As the Red Bull Air Race approaches, the event producers will operate a hotline with race information.
